Department of Human Services – Office of the Senior Practitioner

The Senior Practitioner is generally responsible for ensuring that the rights of people who are subject to restrictive interventions and compulsory treatment are protected and that appropriate standards in relation to restrictive interventions and compulsory treatment are complied with.

The Victorian Office of the Public Advocate aims to promote and protect the rights and dignity of people with disabilities.


Victorian Conciliation and Arbitration Tribunal

VCAT is the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. It is a Tribunal that makes decisions about a range of disputes. It has a number of sections called 'lists'. The Guardianship List deals with guardianship, administration powers of attorney and related matters.

The Victorian Ombudsman

The Ombudsman promotes excellence in public administration in Victoria and seeks to ensure the highest possible standards of public sector service delivery to all Victorians. The Ombudsman enquires into or investigates administrative actions taken by a Government department or public statutory body or by any member of staff of a municipal council. The office also has some important functions aimed at ensuring compliance by state entities with certain specified Victorian legislation such as the Whistleblowers Protection Act 2001, Freedom of Information Act 1982 and the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006.

The Ombudsman is independent and impartial and provides a free service.

The NSW Public Guardian

The NSW Public Guardian is a public official who can be appointed by the NSW Guardianship Tribunal to be the guardian of a person (16 years and over) with a disability when there is no other person suitable or able to be the guardian.

Disability Advocacy and Information Service (DAIS) is an independent organisation that promotes positive changes in the lives of people with a disability and their carers. DAIS offers assistance and services that aim to integrate people with a disability into their general community. Furthermore, DAIS co-operates with both local and state government departments in the implementation of local and regional disability programs and future development schemes.
